We always had to face the question “Where to place sofa?”, be it a family gathering, weekend party or movie nights. It will be bad to see that the guests have to be perched against walls to try and be in the conversation happening around the sofas.
1. Focal point to place sofa
Positioning sofas depend on the focal points of the room. It could be the television, a stone fireplace, a french window or even a bookshelf. This point will take most of the attention of the ones seated.
Arrange your living room and its furniture, including the sofas which take most of the space in a way that allows enough room for you to move it around if you have to. If you are the kinds that love to move around the sofas it would be the best if you get a custom-made sofa.

3. Move around
Even with your sofas around, nobody should find it difficult to walk around or run around. Especially if you have children who would love to go on an adventure in the living room. Draw imaginary lines connecting furniture, walls, and doorways and optimize the space. Try all positions.
4. Around the corner
Sometimes you get home with the new sofa and having already spend too much energy on selecting the one you are tempted to push it to one corner and call it a day.
This may be fine for you but it can make people feel claustrophobic, especially when you sit on the deepest cushions at the end. Keep it away from the walls, to let light and air flow around it.
5. In the sun
It works with all kinds of upholstery except for leather. Genuine leather will fade and crack when exposed to sunlight for long periods. If you are still bent on having your leather sofa next to the window and you may want to have blinds blocking the light partially.

6. Conversational symmetry
This is a classic one. You have your sofas facing each other, turning both into focal points. It’s a great arrangement, especially in case of family gatherings, discussions or game nights. It facilitates conversations because the only other thing you can look at is the dining table or the wall. Neither of which are interesting.
